The Kids and Leaders

Lindsey and Candice went to Kibera with Manna Worldwide last summer.  Devastation:  the open sewage, tin houses stacked on one another, 1.5 million people living in the most intense level of poverty. The students at New Hope Bible Baptist School spend 10 hours a day at school. They are hungry to learn. They know it is their only chance out.   Thanks to Kibera Penda Project, the kids that pass their entrance exam get funding for high school.  School is not free in Africa. It is a privilege.

The Kibera kids had much to say to the Reagan High School students.  Many students at Reagan High School had the opportunity to watch the Kibera Video when school returned in the fall. Some cried listening to the voices of kids from across the world.  We told them it is not going to be easy.  Team meetings every two weeks, one on one mentorship, passport, vaccinations, raising $2,600 each to name a few of the challenges. Many have dropped out, not willing to count the cost. 14 remain. They are up for the challenge.

Thanks to Manna Worldwide, Austin Stone Community Church, and your support, this dream is to become a reality. In June of 2010, 14 students will go to Kibera, one of the worlds largest slums, on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. They will serve at New Hope Baptist School  hosting sports camps, talents shows, and loving on kids across the world.

As we prepare, Reagan High students are working their faith out in love. They are learning the invaluable lesson of working hard for a dream and seeing it through to the end. We realize that this vision is beyond us. With God, all things are possible. The journey has already begun…

  1. The journey of life with Christ…best represented to me by this scripture…

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.–Philippians 1:6

C.S. Lewis said: That is why He warned people to ‘count the cost’ before becoming Christians. ‘Make no mistake; He says, ‘if you let me, I will make you perfect. The moment you put yourself in My hands, that is what you are in for. Nothing less, or other, than that. You have free will, and if you choose, you can push Me away. But if you do not push Me away, understand that I am going to see this job through.

God will complete the work He has started in us. Praise Him.

  2. I am so proud of you Candice for leading these amazing kids on a life changing journey.
